Most people feel back to normal within a few days. Here is what to expect, how to stay comfortable, and when to call us.

Most people return to normal activities the same day or the next. Mild soreness around the treated tooth for two to three days is normal. Ibuprofen (400–600 mg every 6–8 hours with food, as directed by your provider, if not contraindicated) manages most discomfort. Pain that worsens after 72 hours is worth a call.

How long does it take to recover from a root canal?
Most people return to normal activities the same day or the next. Mild soreness around the tooth can last two to three days as the area settles. Any tenderness usually fades steadily during the first week.
Is some pain normal after a root canal?
Yes. Mild soreness or tenderness when biting is normal for a few days, especially if the tooth was inflamed before treatment. It should improve a little each day. Pain that worsens, swells, or lingers beyond a week is worth a call.
What can I take for soreness afterward?
Over-the-counter ibuprofen (for example 400 to 600 mg every 6 to 8 hours with food, if not contraindicated and as directed by your provider) controls most post-treatment soreness well. Your endodontist will give you specific guidance for your situation. Follow their instructions over any general advice.
What can I eat after a root canal?
Wait until any numbness wears off so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Then favor softer foods for a day or two and chew on the other side. Avoid hard or crunchy foods on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is in place.
When should I call the office after treatment?
Call if you have swelling, a fever, pain that gets worse instead of better, a reaction to medication, or a bite that feels too high. These are easy to address. Reaching out early keeps a small issue from growing.
Do I still need a crown or filling after a root canal?
Usually, yes. After root canal therapy the tooth needs a permanent restoration, often a crown, to protect it and restore full chewing strength. Your dentist or endodontist will tell you the recommended timing. Completing this step helps the tooth last for years.
How long will my treated tooth last?
A root canal treated tooth that receives its permanent restoration and regular care can last many years, often a lifetime. Keeping up with brushing, flossing, and checkups protects your result. A tooth that stops hurting still needs its final restoration.
When can I go back to work or exercise?
Most people go back to work the same day or the next, and light activity is fine right away. If your day involves heavy exertion, give yourself a day and follow any specific advice from your provider.
My tooth has a temporary filling — what do I need to know?
A temporary material seals the tooth between your root canal therapy and your permanent restoration. Avoid hard or sticky foods on that side, and try not to delay your follow-up with your dentist. The sooner the permanent crown or filling is placed, the better the long-term result.
Will I need antibiotics after a root canal?
Most root canal treatments do not require antibiotics. Your endodontist may prescribe them in specific situations, such as an active spreading infection. Follow the guidance your provider gives you; do not take antibiotics left over from a previous prescription.
