Tooth Abscess and Swelling explained
Swelling near a tooth, in the gum, or in your face usually points to a dental abscess: a pocket of infection at the root of the tooth. Antibiotics may calm it temporarily, but they cannot cure the source; the infected tissue inside the tooth must be treated.
At our Dr. Phillips office, endodontists drain the infection and treat its source, usually with root canal therapy, so the abscess does not return. Same-day appointments are reserved for situations exactly like this.
When to go to the emergency room first
If swelling spreads toward your eye or down your neck, you develop a fever, or you have any trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room first. These signs can mean the infection is spreading and needs immediate medical care.

Common questions
Will antibiotics cure my tooth abscess?
Antibiotics can reduce the swelling temporarily, but they cannot reach the source of the infection inside the tooth. Without endodontic treatment, the abscess returns.
What happens if a dental abscess goes untreated?
The infection can spread to surrounding bone and soft tissue. Treating the source early is simpler, more comfortable, and usually saves the tooth.
When is tooth swelling an emergency?
Swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, fever, or any trouble breathing or swallowing means go to the emergency room. Otherwise, call our Dr. Phillips office for a same-day visit.
